Beauty abound online store on bigcartel

When i started my handmade business i started off knitting scarves and cowls, earlier this month i added embellished tote bags. I opened an online store on bigcartel e-commerce site after i had researched and considered other hosting sites. I liked bigcartel because it was user friendly and i did not have to use html to build and design a web page. Bigcartel allows me to concentrate on my own brand and build the way i want it to be seen.
Please visit beauty abound online store here, and keep checking for new items, i am always updating the shop.

Until next time, keep shopping.

Lace Cowl, neck warmer knit-along

I just got started on the cowl knit-along which i blogged about here, i do like the pattern, and for the first time i am reading a chart pattern. I thought it was going to be challenging but it has been just fine. The lace pattern has some details, and i have to be very careful while knitting because its very easy to drop stitches. I did have to redo it twice because when i counted the stiches i was coming up short, thank goodness for markers i dont have to worry about that any more.

I am glad i used the autumn heather color i think it will show the knitting pattern better. I also like the yarn by cloudborn fibers which is merino wool, it's soft and feels warm to the skin and is also stretchy.

Until next time, keep knitting.

5 things i have learnt since i started knitting

1. Learning how to read knitting patterns is a good thing.

Learning how to read a knitting pattern is very helpful and will save you alot of unraveling when knitting. Yes it takes time to stop knitting, pick up the pattern read the instructions but with time one gets used it and it almost becomes second nature. When i slow down and read a pattern carefully, i have realised if there is so much information i can always break it down and get it done bit by bit.

2. Getting gauge is a smart thing to do.

This is a step i want to skip  most of the time, but it is super important, not a waste of time and will save you a lot of heartache as you work on a project.

3. All yarn is not created equal

Just because i like a certain color of yarn, or how it feels to the touch, does not mean it's the best yarn for my knitting project. Getting a knitting pattern for that particular yarn is the best way to go and will give you better results.

4. Mistakes are not a bad thing.

Yes, the more mistakes i made early on made me a better knitter faster because i learnt how to correct them and move on to learning a different stitch or pattern. Sometimes it was frustrating yes, but in the bigger scheme of things, i appreciate the fact that i am a better knitter now.

5. Practice, practice, practice

Earlier on i realised if i picked up my knitting everyday even for as little as 15mins i was better off than knitting for long hours one day and putting my knitting on the side for the next three days. Consistency helps to improve my knitting tension not too tight or loose, and my work looks even.

Until next time, keep knitting.

5 reasons to take up knitting

www.beautyabound.co

I. There is a wealth of information about knitting.
The internet is one of the best places to start, personally i started on youtube there are so many tutorials for beginners i am sure anyone can get one that's easy to follow along. Craftsy is also a great source for information, they have online classes, knitting kits, knit-alongs and knitting patterns. Books and magazines are also another place to look, especially for knitting patterns, most of them have very clear pictures to follow a pattern.
Following bloggers who's work you like is a plus because it gives you motivation to try new projects and attempt to knit different patterns.

2. Knitting does not require lots of space.
This is a consideration to take into account especially for people living in smaller spaces. To start knitting you need knitting needles and yarn, you can knit sitting on your couch so you don't have to have a dedicate space for it.

3. Knitting is relaxing and gets you focused on something you like doing.
I think knitting is such a great way to take you mind off the stresses of the day, you are always looking forward to starting a new project or finishing a work in progress.
A good idea would be to start with easier patterns, before moving on to more advanced patterns which might create frustration and giving up too soon.

4. Mistakes can easily be fixed
In case you mess up on a pattern, you can unravel the stiches until you get to where the mistake was made and redo it. You don't have to buy more supplies the same yarn is used.

5. Wide range of knit items to make
There are so many patterns out there you are not confined to knitting only one style, or just certain items. There is a great selection to choose from, for example accessories scarves, hats, mittens, garments sweaters, vests, household items bags, pillow cases.

I started knitting about one year ago and it has been a very exciting experience, i am always on the look out for something new to knit.

Until next time, keep knitting.

Inspiration on pinterest

https://www.pinterest.com/beauty_abound/boards/

Yesterday i blogged about nature being one of my source of inspiration, another place i find inspiration is in cyberspace on pinterest. I like the way you can curate ideas, images and things you like into different boards. They also have secret boards which are not visible to the public, i find these quite useful for specific projects, so when working on new designs i use the secret boards a lot.

Pinterest is very visual and images are organized in such a way that makes browsing a fun experience, i find it great for keeping up with new trends in my industry and collections from brands i like.
I think their search tool is fantastic because i can narrow down a search to be very specific, and then have the option of browsing pins or boards. I like searching boards as they are dedicated to a specific item or product and they tend to have rich content. Pinterest is a great place to get new ideas and have fun while doing it.

Until next time, stay inspired.

Finding inspiration as a crafter

Graphic by Julya Buhain canva layouts

As crafters we are always creating new products or services, for our businesses to stay fresh, hone our craft and the pure joy of doing what we love. The process of creating from idea or concept to the end result, with all its ups and downs is an experience i find quite exciting.
I have blogged about inspiration before here, and one of the things that inspire's me and greatly influences my creative process is nature, the changing seasons, the different colors that come with all these changes.
Beautiful sunrises and sunsets are also very inspiring, the array of colors trigger different color combinations in my mind when selecting yarn, fabric and ribbons. I find myself trying to mimic nature and by doing so come create different designs in my knitting and embellished tote bags.
I am very visual and like to take photos whenever a chance presents itself, i have realised by doing it quite often my mind stays fresh and new ideas are always flowing out of this process.

Until next time, stay inspired.

Boho tote bag

craft ribbon
Craft ribbon

I will be working on another tote bag, i have some time to craft during the weekend. I fell in love with the orange, navy and gold colors of the ribbons and i knew they were going to look pretty on the bag. The other bags were made of  heavy canvas, but this tote bag is cotton, so the neddle work will be much easier and lighter to carry. Anways i will be sure to post the finished bag when i get done.

Hip embellished tote bags

Craft tote bag

Last week i mentioned i had been working on a different project that was not yarn related and today i wanted to share it here on the blog.
The canvas tote bags have been alot of fun to work on, at first the hand stitching was quite a challenge because i have not done it in a long while but once i got the hang of it, it got much easier. I had thought of using lace instead of the burlap but it occured to me lace might be too delicate on the canvas.
I like the texture of burlap and the green color adds some natural, earthy element to the design of the bag and looks great with the other materials used.
